Artificial Societies

Mauro Annunziato, '98-'02.

This is a collection of images (about 50) generated at very high resolution through by an artificial life environment and inspired to the self-organization concept. This concept is related to the emerging behavior of a population of individuals interacting, reproducing and evolving in complex systems. Local dynamics have a chaotic behavior, but their evolution produces structures and organized behavior evoking aspects of the natural life, social interactions and mind dynamics.

The basic criteria to built and drive the generative process in order to create the conditions for the emergence of a global self-organized behavior from the chaotic interactions. By this point of view, the emerging pattern is the chaos revenge which produces global synergies. It is the metaphor of mind and society as "emergent behavior" of a self-organization process at different scales of observation.

These images are at very high resolution (typically 4000x12000 pixels to 12000x50000 pixels). They are rendered on different media: a) printed on high quality paper and b) marble engraving. If you want acquire one or more pieces, please have a look to the priced portfolio.

More details on theory, inspiration, images and generative process are reported in Emergent Structures in Artificial Societies

Neuro Society

Realization: ’98 the B&W version, ’03 this color version. Size 51.5 x 49 cm.

This was the first high resolution image I presented at an exhibition. Generating this image I was impressed by a number of emerging metaphor which can be derived regarding the society reviewed as a unique living form. At the same time I see similar dynamics in the brain. Perhaps, our consciousness is a state suspended in the middle between two living forms: a fragment of the living Earth and a swarm of self-organize configurations of thoughts.

Chaos Revenge

Realization: '99 the B&W version, ’02 this color version. Size 91.5 x 57 cm.

This image is the mine most known. Selected at Siggraph '99 (LA, USA) was reported on the Art Catalogue front cover and in the Press Show Highlights. Since '99 has been included in a traveling show for three years along exhibitions on emergent art in USA. It is the revenge of the organic chaos over the artificial order through the power of create continuously new shapes of real or artificial life. It is curious that many people looking this image don't believe it is made using a computer.

Contaminazione

Realization: '99 the B&W version, ’02 the color version. Size 129 x 51.5 cm.

It represents the creative contamination between two lineage: order and chaos, synthesis and complexity, east and west. The fusion of the two species generates the most creative zone, the "edge of chaos", in the middle of the image, through the genetic fusion of the two characters. This image has been chosen by NASA-JPL to be sent on the first human village on Mars in 2030. (see in www.planetary.org\scien). So this will be the Plancton most traveling image !

The Garden

Realization: '99 the B&W version, ’02 this color version. Size 91.5 x 60 cm.

I have this print in my bedroom. Any time I look it I see new details. It recalls me the birth of the first form of life. A sort of meeting frozen in the time in a fossil rock. It is the garden in the machine where new form of life, the digital beings, start to move their first steps on the earth.

Chestnut Forest

Realization: ’99 the B&W version, ’03 this color version. Size 55 x 47.5 cm.

There is a chestnut forest in Italy close to Rome where I went when I was child. In autumn, in sunny days, the colors were incredible and the place looked as created by a painter. I have no images but fragment of colors and living branching in my memory. When they were recombined on the screen of my computer I immediately recognize the place…

Infolife II

Realization: '00 the B&W version, '02 the color version. Size 140 x 38.5 cm.

This image has a huge resolution, impossible to see with commercial screens and difficult to render with prints under 1.5 m. I tried to push all the computing power I had in order to enlarge the evolution. I was able to see the image only several days after the evolution start. At the end an incredible world rich of micro-cosmos and different local societies is emerged. Walking from left to right you walk through the evolution...

Forma Pensiero
(Shape Tought)

Realization: '99 the B&W version, ’02 this color version.Size 91.5 x 49.5 cm.

Different characters, different evolution. During the development of this image I was trained by the idea of the mind as a self organization process of many living fragments. ... the personality as a dynamic configuration of these fragments... a sort of thinking swarm… When the shapes express synergy like in this image, the thought takes consistence and a design emerges...

Aqua

Realization: ’98 the B&W version, ’03 this color version. Size 63 x 46.5 cm.

I cannot say the reason why this image recalls me the life inside the mother womb. Converging spirals evocate a protective attitude. Anyway I couldn’t control the colors of this image. They flushed without any intention floating as water around me.

Amazonas

Realization: ’98 the B&W version ("The River"), ’03 this color version. Size 62 x 43 cm.

I was searching for long time the "The River". Navigating in the hyperspace of the genetic parameters, finally I founded it. It emerged from a far corner of the gen-world, lost in my memory. When it was organizing on the screen of my computer I immediately realized that I never have been in Amazonas, but Amazonas always has been in me.
